Day 58, Canon City to Fairplay, Colorado. “We Can See Snow”. 75 miles.
We have been blessed with great riding weather again today. Clear skies, and no reports of rain or foul weather of any kind. This morning I had the chance to ride a train. The Royal Gorge Railway that departs from Canon City, for a 24 mile ride through the Royal Gorge and back. $32.50 was a bargain I thought. Lisa decided to go on ahead, as she had ridden trains before, and was eager to get started before it got too hot. I on the other hand had never ridden a real train, and didn’t want to pass this opportunity up. The train ride was two hours, and the ride through the Royal Gorge was a treat I will not soon forget. The Royal Gorge is home of the highest suspension bridge in the world. 850 feet above the river below, and is a favorite rafting and kayaking destination as well. The gorge is fairly narrow with walls that are carved by years and years of erosion. An impressive sight if I may say so myself.
I met up with Lisa in the afternoon about 25 miles out of town where we stopped to have lunch. By this time the temperature had reached high into the 80’s, and would approach the 90’s before long. We were now at about 9,000 feet in elevation. The sky takes on a deeper blue, and the terrain is typical alpine, with pine trees, open pasture land, with small streams, and tree covered mountain peaks. We saw prong horn antelope, deer, a coyote, and buffalo. The vista was outstanding, we could see the snow covered peaks of the rocky mountains off in the distance. The climbing was gradual, and the scenery made the grind bearable. There are no major towns on the route today, but did pass several ranches, and a couple of one horse towns, if you pardon the expression.
It was after 6:00 in the evening when we reached Fairplay. The Riverside Inn is home for the night. We had dinner at Pizza Hut, and are now ready for bed. Aloha, Ted.
